One of the greatest monologues in movie history was by Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross.  If you haven’t seen the movie, please take the next 7 minutes and 22 seconds to watch it, and it takes a couple minutes for it to its stride.  If you’ve already seen it, watch it again, because it is a great motivational speech.

Just to give a little background, the job of the gentlemen in the office is to sell some sort of real estate.  They have been doing a very poor job at it.  In Alec Baldwin’s only scene in the movie, he explains that he is in the same line of work, but out of a different office.  He’s also much more successful, so he’s there to talk to them.

The movie, and the scene in particular has strong similarities to the job as a real estate agent, which we’ll get to.  But first, watch the video (note: contains strong language).

Always Be Closing.  That is the main theme of Alec Baldwin’s monologue.

ABC means to always close the deal.  Always get the lead to buy the product.  There are some cold leads, like the leads that the guys in the office had.  And then there are good leads…the Glengarry leads.  You can always close a Glengarry lead.

In Glengarry Glen Ross, the employees were trying to get their leads to buy real estate.  The guys in the office complained they had a hard time selling the real estate because the leads weren’t good.  But if they had the Glengarry leads, well, then they would be closers.

Do you know Realtors in your office that are like the guys in the office from Glengarry Glen Ross?  The agents who are always complaining that they don’t have good leads?

The product for Realtors is different from the product in Glengarry Glen Ross.  Realtors aren’t trying to close on a real estate deal.  That will come.  Realtors are trying to close on leads to turn them into clients.

ABC for Realtors mean Always Be Closing the product that is a lead.

For Realtors, the source of the lead has a major impact of whether that lead will become a client or not.  Going through the phone book or purchasing lists will leave Realtors complaining that they can’t close leads.

The Glengarry leads of real estate are the ones that come to the Realtor.  The ones that say, “I am interested in buying a house now. ” The leads that give the Realtor their phone number or email address so that they can be turned into the Realtor’s client.

These Glengarry leads for Realtors come from the Realtor’s website.  The lead was on the internet…all leads are on the internet.  The lead found the Realtor’s website through Google, from a referral, from social media, or from a number of different ways.  The value that the lead received from the Realtor’s website was convincing.  When the lead is ready to buy or sell, they contact the Realtor and tell them that they are a Glengarry lead that will be easy to close.

Your website, blog, and social media will bring you the Glengarry leads.  No more second place steak knives for you… you will win the Cadillac.
